GAWE 2024

May 6 @ 8:00 am - May 10 @ 5:00 pm

Tanzania Education Network/Mtandao wa Elimu Tanzania (TEN/MET) is a Network of 232 education Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), influencing the transformation of education and promoting equitable, inclusive and quality education in Tanzania since its inception in 1999. TEN/MET envisions a national education system through which all learners have the opportunity to access inclusive, equitable, and quality education. TEN/MET vision is collectively realized by proactively influencing and informing policy and practices that promote access to inclusive, equitable and quality education in Tanzania. Collectively we foster mutual collaboration with the government, development partners, civil society organizations, communities, parents and students for education for sustainable development.

TEN/MET has steadfastly commemorated the Global Action Week for Education (GAWE) for the past 16 years, starting from 2007. Each year, a region is selected based on identified educational challenges corresponding to the chosen theme. While the overarching goal of GAWE week remains focused on enhancing learning outcomes, the specific objectives for each commemoration vary, taking into account the unique needs of the year and contextual factors.

The Global Action Week for Education is a flagship event for the civil society education movement in the world and has been running successfully since 2003. The platform provides every national and regional education campaigner with an opportunity to highlight one area of the Education for All agenda and make targeted efforts to achieve changes on the ground, with the added support of millions of education campaigners worldwide joining together for the same cause.

GAWE serves as a pivotal moment for education advocates, policymakers, and stakeholders worldwide to unite in advancing the agenda for quality education. For the year 2024, GAWE is poised to spotlight the theme of “Transformative Education,” recognizing the critical role of education in fostering societal change and sustainable development.

Transformative Education is integral to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG Target 4.7 on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and Global Citizenship Education (GCED). It constitutes a vital component of quality education, serving as a catalyst for sustainable development. By imparting learners of all ages with knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes, Transformative Education equips them to tackle complex global interconnected challenges of the 21st century such as climate change, environmental degradation, biodiversity loss, poverty, and inequality.

Thus, transformative education enables learners with understanding and anticipation of change, managing uncertainty, critical thinking, value changes, appreciation of diversity, and empathy; that can potentially lead to social transformation.

The Tanzanian government has recently advanced efforts to institutionalize transformative education within the national education system. This strategic move follows the comprehensive review of curricula and the Education and Training Policy (ETP) of 2014, version 2023, reflecting a commitment to modernize and enhance the quality of education in the country. Therefore, this year GAWE will focus on advocating for the comprehensive implementation of the revised curriculum and ETP 2023, aiming to ensure equitable access to transformative education for all learners across Tanzania.
